Building A Voice
August 19th, 2007 by Me
I think blogging helps in this area. If you have ever wanted to write about a particular topic, blogging might actually help you work out your ideas without putting pressure on you.
It might help build you up as an expert, and it might also help you figure out if your topic is something you really enjoy, or something you enjoy for the moment.
Some people blog about their daily life, and I still do on occasion and that’s fine. Though how often is your world really interesting when all you can think to write is “Another morning, another day at the computer.”
If you’ve been working on a topic, even fiction, you can use your blog as a space to flesh out some things.
Work your charachters through a scene. Let them fight or play. Give them space for a little while until you get comfortable with them.
It doesn’t have to be long. Something short, to the point. Let it breath a while. When you post it, maybe you can give feedback on something. It could be it opens up new ideas.
In any case, writing more about your topic will help you discover your voice. That’s the style in which you write, the way you put words together. Sarcastic? Annoyed? Funny? Intelligent? Each of these can be put into your writing. The way you write can be just as important as what you write.
