Okay, you know that moment you wake up from a dream… and you go “oh wow, I had the best idea for a novel ever!” and you wish you had the energy to scribble down a few notes? You try to remember but by morning whatever it was had vanished. And you agonize for days about ‘the one that got away’ and you were sure it would have been a best seller.

Well, that doesn’t work.

I do happen to keep a notebook and a PDA by my bed at night. Right as I am falling asleep I usually am thinking about books and what I’m writing. I’ll jot down notes before going to sleep. (Those notes actually make sense, because I was half awake when I wrote them.)

I always have strange dreams. Of course, one inspired something so I wrote it down in my PDA.

That’s a lot of what my notes are like when I try to write things down. None of it makes sense. I was so sure I would realize what it was and then Bam, would remember everything. I’ve even written longer notes. Most of it was the same sort of gibberish.

So no, your brain isn’t as clever as you think it is while you are sleeping. Or maybe it is, and your subconsious is secretly laughing at you for thinking you could actually interpret it’s ‘deep ponderings of the night’.

So, I would think it is safe to forget the pen and notebook. I mean, do keep it near you in case you do come up with something. But don’t feel bad if you forget. Probably wasn’t all that great an idea anyway.
