This was inspired by the thread at Absolute Write.
Writers fear. Writers are afraid. Always. If you write a book, you fear it is no good. When it is sold, you fear no one will buy it. When you get good reviews and the money rolls in, you fear that that’s it, your done and you won’t write another one.
I have that. I’m at the stage where I fear I will suck at novels and no one will want it. It doesn’t matter that I’ve completed three or four and I’m working on five and six and I’m almost done. It doesn’t matter if I spend another year editing the lot and come up with two that might make rounds to agents. I’ll go through all that, but I’ll still be worried.
I also don’t want to be one of those writers that goes so famous and does interviews. If my books sell well, I’ll be those writers with a cabin in the woods and a ‘No Visitors’ sign on my door. I’m glad you like it, but let me write. I guess that’s the shy side. Fear of success.
I just want to tell a good story. One that shares my imagination with others. One can hope. But if I let fear control me, I’d never write another word. We have to work past that, as writers, to get down the words that need to be written. Fear becomes your constant companion. But you could call it by another name. Thrill. Thrill of success. the thrill of knowing you completed a novel and the next step is upon you.
