Hurry Up

I don’t understand why everyone is in such a big hurry these days. It seems like a number of my editors or business owners are wanting things done ASAP.

Given that I usually don’t take long to get work completed anyway, I’m always surprised when people want me to do it faster. It’s even better when it’s something like web content. I pride myself in being able to provide content that makes sense, that people come back to read. I usually give a 48 hour turn around, to give myself time to do some research, find references, etc. That’s why I can ask for the prices that I do. I can turn articles into something people actually use, which makes people come back to read, bookmark the page, etc.  (Which has me puzzling about why someone would bother to pay $$$ for hundreds of crappy articles when, for the same price, you could get a few really nice articles, and it will be material people will love and share with their friends.)

Even with that, why is everyone wanting to get it online ‘quickly’? It’s the Internet. I can understand newspapers and magazines wanting something to fill in at the last minute. But… what’s a one day delay for the Internet? What’s a week? You’re not holding a printer back. I’m sure there is a reason for the rush for some people, but it just makes me laugh when I realize that so many people are in a hurry these days.

Maybe I’m too long into this really relaxed and slow moving lifestyle. I like to be spontanious and fun, but I also like being able to sleep in, have a long lunch or take a weekend to working on getting to that next level in a video game.

And then we have the ‘hurry up and wait’ game with publishers. :) But that’s another story.
