Organize!

Every once in a while, I waste hours of time looking for articles, ebooks and information on how to organize myself better so that I can be more productive. Okay, it isn’t a total waste. Sometimes I pick up on really good tips that helps me, even if momentarily, feel better about doing something ‘normal’ people do. I think anything that at least makes you feel better is worth a shot.

I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a book on organizing. The Simple Living books were pretty good, but I have tried to use the library a lot until I found some guru that doesn’t write a  lot of fluff. You know the type. They put books together that look fancy and they are filled with the usual tips you would have figured on your own. Get rid of the clutter is a common one. You don’t know how many times I see this. Yes, people do need to get rid of clutter, but what about us folks who don’t collect a lot of clutter anyway. I collect a number of things, mostly books. I do throw away stuff or try to unload things when I can. But really, clutter isn’t the issue.

My worst problem is time management. I’m terrible with that. I like a structured schedule and I am probably the worst example of someone that actually needs one. I work from home. I write, which means the only date and time I have to worry about is a deadline day.  I probably waste more time than anyone else on the planet. If I actually worked the hours I pretend to do, I’d probably be rich like… well not like Gates but someone not quite so rich. Maybe upper middle class.

I can’t help it. I like goofing off. So where are the organizing gurus who are going to make it easier for the rest of us to function? I don’t have a lot to do, but I would like to organize it a bit to make sure it is fun and I’m not running around wondering what to do with my time or I miss something important.

I keep saying I’ll put myself on a query sending schedule, and then I’ll send three queries and I’ll get busy with things and forget where I left off. :)

But now, I’m starting to wonder if I’m the only one. I am sure there are some people out there that are all together, sending out resumes and making loads of moola when us slackers could be making it if we weren’t slacking off.

There’s one book at the library I keep getting which is about organizing for writers. There’s an ebook online that was okay. I like it and I’m glad I got it, but the whole notebook thing I don’t use. I dig it out once in a while and look at it. I used to use it but it fizzled out.

Maybe I should do some more research on the topic, find out what other writers do to organize. I’ll report on what I find.
